Our Grandmothers and grandfathers, mothers and fathers, are able to provide food for their children and grandchildren through the practice of home gardening which saved their money in the areas of buying foodstuff for their families.
While doing home gardening, they imbibed some cultural practices in their children and grandchildren and also gave them responsibilities in the areas of having to do work on the farmland.
Let us talk about the importance of home gardens and how they have helped people in one way or the other.
Small food gardens near the family home have traditionally made an important contribution to the family.
Home gardens can help provide variety in the diet and supply vital vitamins and minerals.
Some farmers now grow crops to sell from home gardens rather than just for family use only.
The thing is, most rural women don't even know that they are helping to reduce hunger in the world and poverty by way of engaging in home gardening, to them, it is a way of life. It is a way of feeding themselves and also because they grew up seeing their families work on many small plots around the house where all kinds of crops were planted.
On the market days, these women carry their produce to sell. Some go as far as different communities to sell. Some villages are also known for having the best variety of crops where people come from different locations to buy; all planted by men and women folks in their small plots. From selling products, they make money to supply other needs in the house.
We truly cannot emphasize the importance of a home garden, from providing you with food to also being an extra income generator.
Let us make home gardening a very important thing in our lives. No plot is too small.
